🇪🇸 One Small Story to start today’s Never Retire

This morning I went with my wife when she bought a piece of lasagna from a stand in Russafa Market. This places comes up sometimes on YouTube and Instagram. As we waited, the barista from the “hip” coffee shop I go to—located across the plaza from the market—walked right into the stand. We exchanged hellos. I also noticed some Italian wines.

I decided to go back to buy a bottle—Fantini Montepulciano for €11.20. When I returned, I asked the husband and wife behind the counter, ¿El chico de Five-O es familia? Is the guy from Five-O family?

The lady’s face lit up as she replied, ¡Si, es nuestro hijo!

Yet again—another example of small steps towards integration and further proof that’s what’s happening in this neighborhood goes deeper than the headlines. There’s generational life here as this place changes and evolves.

This is what you get when you subscribe to the Never Retire newsletter.

The numbers and the reality yes, but also the extra layers you don’t find from most other sources. These extra layers add up.

Anybody can tell you where to find the lasagna or shallowly report that Russafa is gentrifying—for the millionth time—but not nearly as many tell the stories as they live and breath on the ground.

Anyway—

Here’s a quick guide to the numbers—the moves that make our life in Spain work day-to-day and (soon we can say!) year-to-year.
