Living The Semi-Retired Life: What About Blue Collar Workers Who Need/Want To Work In Retirement?
Since I started writing about Living The Semi-Retired Life—particularly the Never Retire component—I receive questions about what to do if you’re a blue collar worker.
This is what we cover in today’s installment.
In case you’re new or haven’t opened this email in a while, my name is Rocco. I write a Substack about Living The Semi-Retired Life.
We’re forming a community here built around our experiences with and expectations of retirement, which, for quite a few of us means Never Retiring and working in retirement. Don’t worry—these can be good things!
I lead the discussion with details from my journey—past, present and anticipated future—which includes plans to move to Spain. I also detail and discuss ways to manage money as it intersects with work and life and research on the broad spectrum of issues dealing with retirement.

This subject resonates with me for several reasons—
Because so much of the writing around retirement—particularly working in retirement—comes from a white collar perspective, written by white collar workers. Often white collar workers who, like me, create content for a living.
Because it’s a real issue. How to transition into relative old age after a career—or a series of jobs—doing blue collar work. There are not a ton of great answers. So today’s post is as much an exploration and collective discussion as it is a tutorial or solution provider. It’s okay—for you and I—to say I don’t know. We’ll figure it out together, starting today!
Because I have done both. Specifically, I scaled back my writing for a good five years to pursue a career as a bartender in Los Angeles, in part due to my affinity for bars as the social epicenter of cities and communities, my love for hospitality and my desire to do real work with my hands.
The most important distinction to draw in this conversation is whether you absolutely need or simply just want to work in retirement. And, if you need to work in retirement, what is the magnitude of that need?
