I come across super interesting academic research related to retirement, specifically two of our main going concerns—semi-retirement and working in retirement. Like so much scholarly work, the article I will review today contains a mix of obvious conclusions, useful insight and practical extrapolations you and I can draw based on the prevailing themes that underlie Living The Semi-Retired Life.

Today’s article—

When I saw it, my initial thought was, what in the hell is social jetlag?

In a minute, we define social jetlag, review the obvious and explore why it does or could matter to the things we care about.

There’s too much research on retirement to digest. So I have several Google Scholar alerts set up. I get daily emails with lists of all of the academic work published in the area. I sift through it all and include what I consider most meaningful in the newsletter for paid subscribers. I have been doing this for a while and intend to do it more consistently going forward.

To become a paid subscriber, go here.

I have extended the current and final promotion for 2023 until June 15th:

  • Get a monthly subscription for $3.75/month for one year.

  • Get an annual subscription for $37.50 for the first year.

  • Or—the best deal—become a founding member by paying more than $100 and your subscription instantly converts to a lifetime subscription so you’ll never pay again.

So, one of the most interesting things I learned in May.

Social jetlag.

Editor’s note: I got confused when I wrote this so forgive me if it goes astray. (For the record, I’m the writer and editor and I stole that last sentence from a famous song).
