Congratulations to you and Melisse! I'm really glad you two are 'making it legal', which actually matters very much when you are abroad. Even so, have you considered having power of attorney for each other, in case of hospitalization, etc. Also, it's great that you two have found each other, and both of you have the adventuresome spirit, as well as the discipline of budgeting, to achieve your goals together. Wishing you both long life together!

Thanks, Alex. I appreciate it. Definitely something to consider. Lots to do and much of it will happen in Spain to best situate everything there as we get situated!

Great to hear from you, but I'm Anne, not Alex, especially as I intend to comment more often!

Well, shame on me! Sorry about that.

There's another person who goes by AB and commented the other day named Alex. Between that and the little generic Substack icon. My bad.

That said, happy to hear you plan to comment more frequently. Looking forward to it.

I have a friend that have moved to France and another to Ireland with their families, and they both said they wished they had done more paperwork at consulates in the US before they moved. Sounds like your visa will last longer in Spain if you apply there, but it might be easier to get if you apply at a consulate in the US. My friend that moved to Ireland really wishes they had gotten international driver’s licenses before moving.

Send your friends my way so they can answer the Q&A about moving abroad!

There's not a ton we can do at the local consulate here other than the NIE and actual visa. As for the latter, the process doesn't appear nearly as straightforward as going to Spain to apply for several reasons.

The drivers license sounds like quite a process in Spain. And it must be done there. I'm not getting one, but Melisse plans to.

Like I said, lots to do!

Rocco, you researched and put an action plan in place with key deliverables for you and your partner to move to Spain. I commend you. Before you know it, it will be 2025. Follow your bliss - Joseph Campbell. Best of luck.

Slàinte!! You are married! Congratulations to you and Melisse! And by the way this article is written, you have an amazing future ahead. I love seeing the timeline, sounds so clear. I especially like the part of applying online while you are in Spain for a 3 year residence permit, instead of a 1 year. Even if little things go wrong here or there, it is just part of the journey, not the end of the world. I am certain everything is going to turn out even better that you planned.
