I wanted to move to another country starting back in 2017. I got into crypto instead. I didn't concretely know what I wanted to do with my life nearing 60. But I knew back then that I wanted to immerse and learn a foreign language. I wanted to learn and embrace another culture. And I wanted to come from a place of service, not IG moments or the allure of being a American and demanding special treatment, and throwing money around, acting entitled.
Then I met and married my husband who had no desire to be anywhere but the USA, other than to vacation once every couple of years.
But he agreed to try it as he got closer to retirement. But he saw relocating to a foreign country almost as you described. I pulled back on encouraging this in the last year for us, but in the back of my mind I plotted to go and immerse in a Spanish speaking country at least long enough to get a solid base in the language.
And then he died.
Today I have no idea what I want. That is going to take time. I do plan on moving to another area in the US where speaking Spanish is embraced and the culture leans Hispanic. I've done it twice in the past and loved the experiences.
Now I'm also older. Everybody ages differently. Some are running marathons at 70. Others are sitting in front of the TV or scrolling FB, comfortable in their daily lives.
I don't fit in either category. So for now, small steps finding my place in the sun... and hoping to make my long ago dream come true... if it passes scrutiny when I'm ready to venture forth I'll move forward with caution and examine my motives even further. Great article.
I think this is a good attitude. Actually I know it is. I hope you're doing okay.
It's sad to see what's happening on immigration. I really don't think a majority of the country - not even close - agrees with it in the slightest. Without Latinos, American — or U.S. — culture would be much less interesting. Let us know where you land. There's likely a reader or two with some insight.
I'll let you know. I like that you agree with my attitude. Flying solo oftentimes means second guessing myself. Nice to have someone see as I do. I've got many in my spere who do not. But before Carl i marched to the tune of my own drum... just have to get back in step.
